After suffering a dislocated shoulder while diving for a ground ball on Wednesday, Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw will forego surgery and instead follow a plan of rest and rehab, with his earliest return in August.

Manager Craig Counsell told reporters the news Friday before the team's home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"This is what the doctor suggests. They suggest rehabbing it, getting it strong and seeing if you're able to play like that again," Counsell said. "I think surgery is always a possibility when you pop your shoulder out, but they're at least optimistic at the start that rehab is the best way to do this, to get it strong and to get it healthy and you see how it feels."

Shaw needed to be helped off the field after getting hurt Wednesday in the second inning of the Brewers' road game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Shaw attempted to make a diving play on a Jonathan India RBI grounder but stayed on the ground after he was unable to field the ball. The team brought out a cart, but Shaw eventually was able to walk off the field with two trainers, one of them holding his left arm in position.

Shaw, 31, is batting .191 with six home runs and 28 RBIs through 56 games this season. He is in his second stint in Milwaukee, where he spent three seasons from 2017-19, after playing for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2020. Shaw blasted more than 30 homers in 2017 and 2018 with Milwaukee.

Shaw began his major league career in Boston, appearing for the Red Sox in 2015 and 2016.
